Unlike intumescent fire sealants which swell when exposed to heat to protect the gap or seam, fire resistant mastic sealants prevent the passage of fire and smoke by providing a tight seal around the similar or differing substrates of the gap. Usually part of a fire stopping system, fire resistant mastic sealants are designed, extensively tested and suitably certified to stop the penetration of flames and smoke for an extended period to effectively buy more time for evacuation, (normally 4 hours).
