Nowadays, as well as still being the go to tape for it's original purpose, gaffa tapes are made from heavy cotton, cloth pressure-sensitive tape with strong adhesive and tensile properties. This makes gaffa tapes especially useful for easy and quick application off the roll as it can be can be torn by hand whilst still being adequately strong, so no cutting tools are necessary, and thus can easily be ripped into narrower strips when desired. The synthetic adhesive typically leaves little or no residue and will generally not damage most surfaces when removed. Gaffer tape is usually more expensive than duct tape because it's manufactured in smaller quantities, has more exacting specifications, and is marketed for professional use.
